Ways to Keep Busy if the BRP is Closed

When it comes to planning adventures, sometimes you may hit a bump in the road. While the scenic roads of Blue Ridge Parkway draw in many visitors, weather conditions, maintenance projects or emergency events may cause temporary road closures. If this is the case, no need to fret! There are still plenty of ways to have a fun-filled itinerary here in Haywood County. Check out these activities that will drive you wild, without feeling like you’re missing out.

Shopping

If you love to shop and collect unique finds, you’ve come to the right place. Haywood County is filled with several specialty shops and treasure troves. Shop for jewelry, apparel, homemade goods, fine art, pottery, and so much more. Seriously, the list goes on. No matter what you’re into, you are sure to find a place that fits your style. Don’t forget to grab a souvenir or a gift to share with someone special.

Restaurant Hop

Foodies, listen up! When it comes to finding a tasty meal to satisfy your cravings, we know how to delight your tastebuds. But why just try one place? Make a day of it and take a tour of the county to try all our favorite spots for grub. Stop for a cold craft beer at a brewery or indulge in a farm-to-table appetizer to share. Let the flavors of the NC Smokies take you on an adventure. Before you dig in, let your phone eat first and tag us @VisitNCSmokies.

Lake Junaluska

Sometimes the warm weather can truly bring the heat. Make this your excuse to trot over to Lake Junaluska for a day of watersports. Grab your paddle and make a splash with canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. For a more leisurely activity, go fishing to see who can reel in the biggest catch or take a stroll along the rose walk. Lake Junaluska offers breathtaking views with activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Dales Wheels through Time Museum

Have a love for history and rare artifacts? Dive into the rich heritage of our county at the Shook-Smathers House, which many claim as the oldest standing frame-built house in Western North Carolina. The Shelton House is another great stop to see a collection of historic North Carolina handicrafts. For some history that is even more riveting, stop by Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum to see a legendary collection of rare motorcycles. Who knows what new facts you’ll discover!

HART Theatre

Lights, Camera, Action! Immerse yourself in the drama of a show at the HART Theatre in Waynesville. Enjoy their lineup of plays and performances that will make you laugh, cry, or dance in your seat. Be sure to check out their website to see what’s playing and to grab your tickets.

Family Fun

Treat your crew of travelers to a round of mini-golf, or as we like to call it “carpet golf!” Enjoy a competitive round of 18 holes with stunning mountain views at Maggie Valley Carpet Golf—the winner buys ice cream! If you want to keep the fun rolling, head over to Smokey Mountain Sk8way & Fun Zone, Western NC’s largest roller-skating rink and family entertainment center. You can race the rink, test your skills to win awesome prizes, or relax at their café with food and refreshments.

There are so many activities to enjoy here in Haywood County while the Blue Ridge Parkway is closed. So don’t let that stop you from going wild with all the mountain adventures. The silver lining: it will give you a reason to come back and visit! Be sure to share your photos from your trip with us using #HayNow or by tagging us @VisitNCSmokies.
